In Southwest ISD all of our elementary campuses are implementing the Leader in Me Program. The Leader in Me Program is built upon The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Covey. Your children are learning these 7 Habits daily while they are at school –
Habit 1 – Be Proactive Students learn that they are in charge. They are responsible for their choices.
Habit 2 – Begin with the End in Mind Students talk about the importance of having a plan.
Habit 3 – Put First Things First The concept we talk about is choosing to work first, then play.
Habit 4 – Think Win-Win We want our students to know that everyone can win. This is about conflict management and mutual respect.
Habit 5 – Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood The big idea is to listen before you talk.
Habit 6 – Synergize The idea of this habit is that together is better!
Habit 7 – Sharpen the Saw This shows our students that balance is best – balance of body, mind, brain, and soul.
Every morning we begin the day with our school pledge and a tidbit about one of our habits. Our counselor, Mrs. Smith, is visiting all our classrooms regularly to lead students in learning and discussing the Habits. In addition, at our monthly pep rally we recognize students who exhibit one of the habits with consistency in front of their peers. Perhaps that which is having the greatest impact is the use of our leader binders. Our students are setting goals and keeping track of their progress.
The skills that our students are learning at school will take them through life. The skills can be implemented in any career they choose. Please ask your child what habit they practiced today.
